In the article entitled "The Pros and Cons of Social Media In the Classroom", author Karen Lederer gives the pros and cons about the trends of social media in our classrooms. She writes "As an educational tool, social media enriches the learning experience by allowing students and teachers to connect and interact in new, exciting ways. Web sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn provide a platform where users can dialog, exchange ideas, and find answers to questions."1 Some argue that the cons of this trend outweigh the pros, but you be the judge for yourself.
As an educational tool, social networking can be used to enhance learning experiences between student and teacher, enhance student interactions and connections between students. Students can also upload resumes and network with companies who have job openings in a student's field of study. So far, sounds good to me. On the flip side, social media can be a distraction to learning, if not properly governed by the instructor and the student practicing self control and stay focused. Social media can be a breeding ground for the term cyber bulling. that is where a student is harassed by a person online by threats and using vulgar language. Lastly, Lederer states that social media is disrupting the development of real life social skills by eliminating the face to face contact with other people.
In my opinion, the social media train can not be stopped. In everything, you have the good and the bad. The idea is to learn from both sides of the coin, and use it to increase your capacity and make a difference in this world. I see this as a trend growing wilder than our imaginations can handle. Imagine a house hold where in one room, the kids are online in school, in the next room, mommy is online teaching at a University, and the next room daddy is in a virtual courtroom defending his client. Now how about that?
